DESIGN II: FINAL PROJECT

Final Project (Design II) Exterior Rende

This is our final project of the semester in this class. We were tasked with creating a single family house on a fictional parcel of land in Webster, New York. We were given a set of drawings: a site plan, at least two floor plans, elevations, a section, and a few renderings. We were also told to incorporate the concept of cobblestone construction (which is popular around Webster) into our design at some point.

I started by looking at the site, which slopes towards Lake Ontario; since the site is on a hill, I chose to create a design that steps up the hill. I designed to create a large deck accessible from the first floor (which contains the bedrooms and laundry rooms) while the second floor (which houses the living room, dining room, and kitchen) uses the roof of the first floor as a deck. I created a large semi-circular deck with a shed attached to the first floor. I chose to lay out a series of hallways on the first floor to allow access to the deck without violating the privacy of the people who live in the first floor bedrooms. I offset the laundry room from one of these hallways while the master and a Jack and Jill bedroom frame the hallways. On the roof of the first floor I placed a concrete deck with a fence around it. On the second floor I chose to lay out the living room and dining rooms adjacent to one another with the kitchen adjacent to the dining room (and only accessible from the dining room). I made the west wall of the second floor mostly glass to allow for sunset views of the lake. We were required to place a fireplace in the second floor living room; I chose to place one separate from the wall and at a 45 degree angle from the walls, which anchors the fireplace in the room. For the roof, I chose a hip style roof to tie the building into the lakeside buildings around the area (which predominately have hip-style roofs).

For the site I created a long walkway towards the dock I created. On the dock I created a single large docking area and a glass pavilion style building on the dock for activities on the dock.
