DESIGN IV: Copenhagen Museum of Architecture

Exterior Rendering 2.jpg

This is our third and final design project of the semester in this class. We were tasked by our teacher to create a museum of architecture on a site in Copenhagen, Denmark. Weren't given any passive goals with this project but we did have to use sustainable attributes. We were told to provide a site plan, floor plans, elevations, a detailed building section, a detailed wall section, building performance analysis data, a working drawing series, a series of renderings, a detailed cross section and building model, a booklet of the project from the beginning of the design to the final drawings, and two posters.

We started this project out by doing a series of concept models to help develop our forms. Each of my four sets of forms were inspired by different designs: organic shapes, waves, 3D versions of nearby streets, and models inspired by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, as one of his sculptures was located in a garden adjacent to our site. After three to four different iterations of concept models, each with these same ideas in mind, I ultimately came up with my form through the combination of one of my abstract wave models with the basic shape of a sculpture by Pomodoro, specifically the sculpture The Pietrarubbia Group: il fondamento, l’uso, il rapporto, housed in Storm King Art Center. Once I combined these two ideas, I started to play with combinations of these two elements, I ultimately came up with a design featuring these two elements, with the shape based on Pomodoro's design acting as the main body of the building while the piece inspired by the wave was added to the building's exterior as a feature. After this I further developed my ideas and my form changed over time as I started adding the rooms of the program into the shape.

Our teacher gave us an extension and then removed the working drawing aspect of the project, thus no working drawings will be included.

The passive features I included in the building were access to natural daylighting. Other sustainable features I included were a large solar array on the east side of the building, a high insulation value, and a tightly sealed facade.
