DESIGN V: Mercantile Building

Exterior Rendering 1.jpg

This is our second design project of the semester in this class. We were tasked by our teacher to remodel an existing building in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. We weren't given any passive goals with this project but by remodeling an existing building we're using sustainable ideals. We were told to provide a site plan, floor plans, elevations, a detailed building section, a detailed wall section, and a series of renderings.

I decided to add a small addition to the south façade of the building as currently all of the existing windows have been removed and the façade is all patched up with wood and found bricks. My design for this addition had a concrete facade as a way of contrasting with the existing brick structure. Most of the modifications to the building were on the interior with stabilization of the cables, new partition walls, and new spaces that were created. Most of the exterior remains as it was with little to no modification of the exterior walls except for new doors, new handicapped ramps, and new windows. We were helped by a local firm that had been working with the owner of the building already so we were given and allowed to modify their Revit file to make my design.

In terms of floor usage, we were told by the client that they were planning on putting a restaurant and brewery on the first floor and an event space on the fourth floor, so we were given free reign to come up with designs for the second and third floor. I chose to design a museum dedicated to Williamsport's history on the second floor and an art gallery on the third floor; I added a rooftop event space as well.
