Overview 5.JPG

This was my second of two trips that I took with classmates.

On Day One, we arrived at JFK Airport in New York, we took a flight from JFK to Rome, where we were to take another plane to Venice.. However, due to a strike, we weren't able to get to Venice on schedule so we spent time in a train terminal for a while. We then took a longer train ride to Venice than planned, so we lost most of the day. We took water taxies from the Venice train terminal to the hotel. Once we got settled, we had the first of three scheduled dinners. After dinner, me and a couple classmates walked to the Frari where we hung out for a bit. We soon returned to the hotel.

On Day Two, we walked to Santa Maria della Salute, arguably one of the most famous Venetian churches. After touring the Salute, we left, crossed the Accademia Bridge, and walked to St. Mark's Square. We toured the Doge's Palace and we went into St. Mark's Basilica. After that, we had the rest of the day to ourselves. I left, went back across the Accademia Bridge, and went to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. After going through all of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and an exhibition on Jean Arp, I left for the Fondation Emilio Vedova; I didn't realize this foundation had two buildings at the time. After exploring one of the two buildings, I left for the Punta della Dogana, which I went through. After that, I went back across the Accademia Bridge to an art gallery I saw on my way to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. After spending time in there, I left and went to the Rialto Bridge, after photographing that I went to the Frari again where I ate. After that, I returned to the hotel. At night, I left again to catch St. Mark's Campanile strike 12 midnight. After that I returned to the hotel.

On Day Three, we left the hotel on water taxies and arrived at the bus terminal. We left on a bus; we ate at a rest stop on the way to Florence. After arriving in Florence, we took another bus to Michelangelo Plaza, overlooking the city. After spending time there, we walked to St. Minias on the Mountain, a nearby church. After touring both the church and the monumental cemetery behind it, we took a quick bus tour of the city as we arrived at our hotel. I left on my own to explore the city, I went to Florence Cathedral, Republic Square, the Strozzi Palace, the New Basilica of St. Mary, and the Museum of the 20th Century. I then returned to the hotel.

On Day Four, we went to Florence Cathedral. However, the line to get into the cathedral was too long so we went to the Cathedral's Museum instead, we went to the most important locations in the museum. After that, we left for Piazza della Signoria, where we took a break for lunch. I spent most of the time going through the Loggia dei Lanzi and photographing the sculptures in the square. After we reconvened, we went across the Old Bridge to the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, we went through most of the gardens. We went back across the Old Bridge to Uffizi, the final location of our day. I spent a couple hours going through Uffizi. After that, I returned to the Museum of the 20th Century to go through the building. I took the opportunity to look around some other landmarks at dusk before returning to the hotel.

On Day Five, we went to the Basilica of St. Lawrence first. After touring most of the significant spaces in the cathedral, we left for Florence's Central Market. Once we got there, we were allowed to do whatever we want. I left to go to the Basilica of the Holy Cross; after going through all of the church, I left to go to the Galileo Museum. After going through every space in the museum, I left for the New Basilica of St. Mary, to go through it this time. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go through every space as the complex was starting to close. I left and returned to the hotel.

On Day Six, we checked out of the hotel and went to Florence's train station. We took a train to Rome, where we immediately checked into the hotel. I left to visit the Basilica of St. Mary Major before we started a walking tour. The tour covered five churches: St. Benedict at the Little Fountain, Our Lady of the Staircase, St. Mary in Trastevere, St. Francis of Assisi by the River, and St. Cecilia in Trastevere. After going through almost every space in each church, we left to return to the hotel.

On Day Seven, we went to the Vatican Museums. We walked through the major spaces of the Vatican Museums and ended the tour in St. Peter's Basilica. After going through about half of the church, we left for the Castle of the Holy Angel where we took a walking tour. After finishing the tour, we returned to the hotel. I left soon after to go to two churches, the Church of St. Mary of the Victory and the Basilica of St. Mary Major. After going through most of the churches, I returned to the hotel. I left again soon after to meet a group of friends at the Trevi Fountain at midnight. After meeting up with them and hanging out for a while, we all walked back to the hotel.

On Day Eight, we took a bus from Rome to Naples. We first stopped in Pompeii where we toured most of the ruins including the Forum and the ruins of some of the temples. After leaving Pompeii, we returned to Naples and we had a walking tour of the city. After finishing the tour, we boarded the bus and returned to Rome.

On Day Nine, we started our day at the Colosseum, where we toured most of the building except for its very top level. After going through the Colosseum, we walked and entered the Palatine Hill. We toured some of the ruins and we ended our events for the day at the Roman Forum. After getting permission to do what we wanted, I went to the Capitoline Museums and the Victor Emmanuel II Monument. After looking around both, I took an Uber to MAXXI, a contemporary art museum designed by Zaha Hadid. After going through almost all of the museum, I left and walked to the People's Square where I took a detour to the National Museum of Modern Art; unfortunately my phone died while in the museum so I backtracked to the People's Square and took the Rome Metro back to the hotel.

On Day Ten, we took the Metro to the Spanish Steps for a walking tour. We left the Spanish Steps and walked to Trevi Fountain. After spending time there, we walked through the Alberto Sordi Gallery to the Pantheon. We toured the Pantheon's interior and left soon after. We then went to Piazza Navona, where our tour ended. After this, I walked back to the People's Square and the National Museum of Modern Art, finishing what I had started the day before. After going through the rest of the museum, I discovered the Rome Metro system was down, so I was forced to walk back to the hotel. At dusk we left the hotel again and had our farewell dinner at a Roman restaurant. I went back to the hotel with a group of friends and played Uno for a while.

On Day Eleven, we left the hotel and went to the Rome Airport, where we took a flight back to JFK in New York. I had to wait in the terminal for most of the day to take another plane to BWI where I met my father and finished the trip.
