DESIGN VI: Marina Bay Resort and Concert Hall

Rendering 10.jpg

This is our second and final design project of the semester in this class. We were tasked by our teacher to create a resort and our choice of either a zoo or a concert hall on a site of our choice. I chose to design on a site in Singapore near Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. We continued to use the concept of Integrated Design in this class to design our buildings in this way. We created our own Vision Statement, Goals, and Benchmarks for this project so we could gauge whether our building would be sustainable or not. Unlike the last project we didn't have to create our own program and our teacher provided us with the square footages so we could focus on the layout of the spaces and other things like that. As part of the requirements we needed to design a 14 story tower as part of the design where most of the rooms are contained. We were told to provide a site plan, floor plans, typical room layout plans, elevations, a detailed building section, a detailed wall section, a vertical circulation plan, building performance analysis, sustainable diagrams, and a series of renderings.

I started on the project by setting my vision, goals and benchmarks. After that I started doing research and I decided to create both structures as two separate buildings. I early on decided to create a market thoroughfare between the two buildings but I waited until later in the project to propose the idea to my teacher. I was doing research on the Louvre Abu Dhabi at the time the project started so I decided to use a similar concept with my auditorium, the idea of a dome over the auditorium both as a feature and as a way of creating a path for rainwater to flow into my rainwater collection system. During my research I did research on the Supertree Grove, a series of large-scale trees inside of Gardens by the Bay, this led me towards a floral-inspired design. Around this time I came up with the idea of juxtaposing water and nature in the design, with the auditorium acting as the water part and the resort acted as the nature part. I came up with a second design with a tower designed to resemble a Buddhist temple in Singapore. Around this time I abandoned the water-nature juxtaposition and I decided to solely focus on a nature inspired design. After I developed these ideas, I set up the structures, started furnishing, and I decided to add a third auditorium to the Concert Hall portion of the project. After these decisions I started to lay out both spaces, I designed the outdoor auditorium and the main resort floors. After this I laid out the concert hall spaces and the second floor of the resort. After this I started to design the hotel rooms and the observation deck at the top of the tower. I then focused on adding floral inspiration to the facades and the interiors of both buildings. After these details were added I finalized the designs of the rooms and suites and I started the final rendering processes. Using the same calculations I used in the last project, I sized my solar array and my water collection system.

In terms of sustainable features, the major features are the water collection system and the solar array, other systems are heavily insulated walls and the use of local building materials.
