DESIGN III: TEAM BUILDING COURSE

This is our first project of the semester in this class. We were tasked by an instructor at my school with creating a team building rope course on the campus of Pennsylvania College of Technology in a parcel of land behind one of the residence halls. Were given a series of requirements: it must incorporate at least five different rope courses, a meeting place for classes, and other potential landscaping elements. We were told to provide a site plan, renderings, and a video of the project to the teacher. We were also told to be mindful of a planned bike path expansion that could take up some land we could use for the site.
Since the site is located on campus, I chose to go to it. While there, I walked around and I took a few photographs of the site. During one of the classes after I visited the site, the profession who commissioned the project drew a rough drawing of the site, I took a picture of that drawing and blew up the image to the right scale for the sake of drawing potential site layouts. After I settled on a design, I researched the different rope course equipment and I designed seven different pieces of equipment for the course. I laid out the rope course area (which had to be mulched for safety reasons) with the activities able to be rearranged throughout the spaces if necessary; I fenced in this area so members of the college couldn't access the space and I designed a shed for on-site storage. For the meeting place I chose to create an interior space inspired by the Barcelona Pavilion. I created a locker room for student access and I chose to glaze the campus-facing façade of the building as a way of isolating it from the campus; I left the course-facing side of the façade open to the elements. I created the pavilion with ramps for ADA accessibility and staircase access for non-disabled people. For landscaping, I chose to create a small rock garden on site for climbing and other activities.
